Sustainability & social responsibility
YOKOHAMA is helping Thai farmers to increase their productivity
The sustainable cultivation of natural rubber, but at the same time increasing effectiveness and quality in production while also assuming social responsibility – these should not be mutually exclusive. Two years ago, tyre manufacturer YOKOHAMA decided to take on this difficult balancing act, reaching a corresponding agreement with the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT), a state-run company that falls under the Thai Ministry for Agriculture and cooperative (MOAC).
During the course of this collaboration, YOKOHAMA recently ran a seminar event with a view to helping Thai natural rubber farmers to improve the quality and productivity of their manufacture.
Fifty farmers from the region of Surat Thani, home to the Thai natural rubber processing company, Y.T. Rubber Co. (YTRC), tool part in the event. In addition to valuable and practical information on sustainable rubber cultivation, participants received 250 kg of valuable specialist fertiliser, developed with the help of RAOT's specialist knowledge, free of charge. A donation that was gratefully received by all participants.
YOKOHAMA is a founding member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), and in this regard revised its own procurement policy back in September 2021. The current event in Thailand reflects the principle that is rooted in YOKOHAMA's procurement policy, whereby the company supports all suppliers, including smallholders and other parties involved in the supply chain.
