Motor oil with viscosity 15W-40
Engine oil with a viscosity of 15W-40 is a widely used lubricant that is particularly suitable for older engines and vehicles that are operated under normal to slightly demanding conditions. The viscosity of an engine oil describes how fluid or thick the oil is at different temperatures. The first number, ‘15W’, refers to the fluidity of the oil at low temperatures, where ‘W’ stands for winter. A value of 15W indicates that the oil is slightly thicker at cold temperatures than oils with a lower W number, meaning that it will flow less quickly at very cold temperatures, but will still provide adequate protection when starting the engine.
The second number, ‘40’, indicates the viscosity at operating temperature. A value of 40 means that the oil remains viscous enough at high temperatures to protect the engine from wear, especially under normal operating conditions and in older engines that may have greater tolerances.
15W-40 engine oil is often used in older vehicles, commercial vehicles and agricultural machinery. It is a good choice for engines that operate in moderate temperatures and do not need to withstand extreme loads or temperatures. This oil offers balanced protection and reliable lubrication, making it a popular choice for many drivers. Manufacturers such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Caterpillar often recommend 15W-40 for older models or for engines that are not specifically designed for high performance or extremely low temperatures.
